Description

A new commentary by Jeremy Richey is a welcome addition covering the progression to this film in the wake of Rollin's financial difficulties (including the failure of Lips of Blood and his gun-for-hire work in the adult film industry), the literary and artistic influences at play here, the relationships to his more traditional vampire projects, and the contributions of other crew and cast members here. Virgins and Vampires”, a 24 minute profile of Rollin, with an extensive interview, from the TV series Eurotika! Threatening them with his, er, gun the women appear to be distinctly unperturbed by his aggressive attitude towards them.

While Lahaie might have made a name for herself as an adult film star, she's got a powerful and near hypnotic screen presence here, and is not only fun to look at, but quite competent in her role as well. Playback region 2: please note that all of our DVDs are region 2 and will not work outside of Europe unless you have a multi-region or compatible DVD player. His films can be said to be fantasy films mixed with horror , although this one is more straight horror.Fascination earns its name from the two seductive vampires stringing along Marc's attention in their undisclosed evening. Finishing off this awesome package are the trailers to the five films initially released under Kino's Rollin series and a very attractive booklet (unfortunately the same as the one included with the other discs, but welcome nonetheless).

FASCINATION is often described as a vampire film yet, like few other horror films, it is actually about blood fetishism. Not surprisingly, the actors have little opportunity to do more than serve as gorgeous set decoration; the subtitled dialogue is almost extraneous. The framing of the interview sequences is also a little horizontally stretched now, which is a tad distracting. Jean Rollins films are not for everybody - they're trippy, dreamlike and almost surreal at times and frequently involve graphic violence coupled with kinky sex, all qualities that are bound to turn off less adventurous viewers.

Rollin's a true original, his films truly aren't like anyone else's, and I award big points for originality. If you are in Australia or New Zealand (DVD Region 4), note that almost all DVDs distributed in the UK by the BBC and 2entertain are encoded for both Region 2 and Region 4. Madeleine Carroll - soon to find fame as Hitchcock's premiere ice blonde in The 39 Steps - stars in this risqué comedy of manners and infidelity, an early talkie from 1931. The scenes with Brigitte slaying with the scythe could've been more effective if they were more graphic. Safely secluded away from the rest of the countryside, here he plans to hide out until it's safe to make it away with his winnings, leaving the rest of the robbers without any money and a whole lot of understandable resentment.Instead, at the end of the film (77:14), a silent blank screen plays until 78:10 - the BBFC runtime - then credits are shown on a black background, the disc finally ending at 79:34. Jean Rollin's Fascination relishes in atmosphere and voracity, offering more siren-like seduction amid its vampire elements than mounting tension. Her darker chin length hair playing contrast to Lahaie's longer blonde locks, her red lipstick playing contrast to her pale skin - she's quite beautiful here and it Rollin's camera doesn't worship her quite as obviously as it does Ms.

Unable to leave due to the gun-toting bandits outside and now unwilling to leave anyway due to a notable degree of sexual enticement from Eva, Marc is destined to be swept up in the strange activities that are about to take place in the castle. The last page of the booklet contains a brief note from Nigel Wingrove regarding his early 90s efforts to bring Rollin's films to the masses.

It is, however, a huge step in the right direction in terms of giving this director's work the respectful presentations that some of us feel it has long deserved. A "vampire" coven has enlisted two of its members, a sensual blonde Eva (Bridgette Lahaie) and a lean brunette Elisabeth (Franca Mai), to ensnare a male sacrifice for their thirst.
