About this deal

Connect the headphones to the USB port of a computer using the USB cable provided as though you were charging them. When connecting the M20xBT to a 3.5mm cable, the power turns off automatically for passive audio without consuming battery. In this mode, the sound is more dynamic, less compressed. The lower midrange is a bit more exposed while the upper treble is also slighting more bright-sounding, albeit still obscured by the prominent midrange.Verify that the indicator lamps on both headphones flash white, and then press and hold (at least 6 seconds) the multifunction buttons/ touch sensor on both headphones while in the charging case. Meanwhile the sizable earcups host 40mm drivers with rare-earth magnets, and these deliver what we must declare to be wonderful sound for the money. As with the studio originals their sound is solid and spacious, well underpinned by pacy bass but with a wide and airy soundstage within which every instrument gets its due, while vocals are presented clearly.

READ NEXT: These are the best noise-cancelling headphones to buy right now Audio-Technica ATH-M20xBT review: What did we like about them? However, comfort issues mean you’ll likely want to avoid extended listening sessions, while ineffective sound isolation makes them a poor choice for commuting. Then you have the Connect companion app, which is very useful when it works, but is extremely inconsistent. These issues add up and ultimately detract from a great-sounding pair of over-ear wireless headphones. The ATH-M20xBT are a mixed bag. Audio quality is fantastic for the price, with plenty of bass and a detailed mid-range doing justice to a wide range of genres. Battery life is also impressive, ensuring you won’t find yourself having to charge the headphones more than once every couple of weeks, if that.

If you did get caught short then the Audio-Technica ATH-M20xBT come with a 1.2m audio cable included in the box so you can listen through a wired connection instead. You do also get a low latency mode which is made for gamers and for streaming video because it helps to reduce delay. Activating it is really easy, you just press the MFB three times. You'll be able to see the difference more in mobile gaming than anything else. The design is solid, if a little utilitarian, with a flexible headband that doesn’t pinch too closely to your skull and is reasonably well-padded. The earcups could do with being a bit plusher, however – they’re a little too firm and can get uncomfortable during extended listening sessions. Personally, I prefer the less-hyped tuning of the M20xBT compared to M50, and if you are sensitive to upper frequency, the M20 might be a better option. Having said that, the M50xBT2 is a more premium headphones with more features like LDAC, custom EQ, better build, so you pay for better features with limited-edition colour options. Plus, music played on M50 is much clearer, the highs are more articulated and precise. Its tuning is more likable to the general listeners. If you're after lots of control over the sound, the Audio-Technica ATH-M20xBT don't have any manual or preset equaliser settings. That could be off-putting to some but given the clarity of the tuning straight out the box, I wouldn’t say that’s a dealbreaker.

Audio-Technica didn’t need to include any listening modes, but they added a Low Latency mode for enhanced streaming and gaming. There wasn’t any difference when watching Netflix shows or YouTube clips. I’m not an avid gamer, but from the short amount of time I put into Call of Duty Mobile and Mario Run, audio synchronization was improved when enabling the feature. With the product turned on and not connected with a Bluetooth device, press and hold (about 6 seconds) the power supply/control button and volume buttons (+/-) at the same time. About 5 seconds after both headphones (L (left) and R (right) sides) are placed in the charging case (with battery remaining), press the multifunction buttons/touch sensor of both headphones twice in a row. You can perform this simultaneously or one after the other. For example, there’s a lot going on in Alex the Astronaut’s Haircut– the busy rolling drums in particular, and these soften into slight confusion when played via Bluetooth; they were more punchy and defined via cable.

Audio-Technica estimates that the headphones can last roughly 60 hours on battery—that's an excellent claim, but your results will vary based on your typical listening volume levels. Make sure the indicator lamp is flashing rapidly in white, and press and hold the power supply / control button and the volume up button (+) at the same time (for about 6 seconds). But in saying that, I personally was able to look past them. The sound isolation was good enough to make me not yearn after ANC and I enjoyed the default tuning, so I still think they’re worth considering. I just maybe wouldn’t use these on an aeroplane and I'd be careful not to be too clumsy with them. Audio-Technica ATH-M20xBT review: also considerListening in wired or wireless mode didn’t affect the quality much. There was only a slight increase in volume when connecting the aux cable to my laptop. Given that Bluetooth operation requires fitting chips, power and batteries inside the headphones, the first surprise is how light the new wireless headphones are, at 216 grams – that’s just 26 grams over the non-wireless version. Disconnect and then reconnect the USB charging cable to reset the product. Resetting does not change any of your settings (pairing information, volume setting, etc.)
