Well, usually I watch adaptations of books I have read, it is not often that I do things the other way round. Vera Brittain and Winifred Holtby had lived together in London after graduation and remained very close friends throughout Holtby's lifetime. Burton puts her trust in the power of collective action by local government to create a more beneficent "English landscape". There is a huge cast of characters, complex and flawed, such as Alderman Emma Beddows, it illustrates the repercussions of the enormous loss of men in WW1, and covers local government politics.

I mean the fact that Robert Carne is considered a good-looking man and constantly likened to Mussolini. He is conservative, reactionary, enamoured of the old ways of farming, a keen hunter and essentially patriarchal. Half a chapter of romance that made me well up with an undescribable churning in heart is a testament to Holtby's brilliance. Meanwhile, the spectre of war seems to be everywhere – not only the fallout following WW1 but the threat of another conflict just hovering on the horizon.

Blighted by recession and devastated by the loss, they must also come to terms with significant social change. On the whole it's a positive and hopeful book, but there is a lot of illness and dying here; the author was terminally ill when she wrote it, and it's hard not to imagine something of Holtby in Astell, who is desperate to accomplish his work before illness keeps him from it. As you read you will stumble upon beautiful phrases such as "slapped the kettle on the stove" and "fastened it at the throat with a cameo brooch" strewn over a slow narrative. But if Carne is in some ways a modern Rochester (and in the novel as opposed to the tv version, this is even lampshaded because of course Sarah has read Jane Eyre and the comparison occurs to her), the relationship goes another way.Mrs Woolf, wife of the manager, is a very celebrated author and, in her own way, more important than Galsworthy.
