If you've ever seen a performance by Sarah Kay you probably realized how much she puts in her poetry. Poets as such are few and far between, and if this is what Sarah Kay has to offer in her 20’s I cannot begin to imagine what her life long career and future works will be like. I didn't know anything about Sarah Kay or her poetry before I met her at the signing for Jonny Sun's book this past June, but once I heard her read her poem "The Paradox," I was immediately enthralled and added her poetry collection, No Matter The Wreckage, to my TBR and my Christmas want list. Hopping on the poetry bandwagon for 2018 is intimidating considering my exposure to the hype as I have been resisting it for quite a while now.

Most known for her spoken word poetry and work with Project VOICE, Sarah Kay manages to pull us into her world through her masterful art of painting pictures with letters. You may have never heard of Sarah Kay or maybe you have watched every performance in every nook and cranny of the internet. Most importantly, the poems themselves are beautifully written, capturing a spectrum of ideas and topics in a really touching, personal fashion. But I wrote the poem after a pattern had developed in my life that resulted in me having “near-misses” with great tragedies. With freshness and wisdom, Kay's poetic voyage invites readers to embark on a soul-stirring journey of self-discovery and exploration of the world around her. Sarah Kay is a spoken word poet, which means that her poetry is generally presented orally, as opposed to on paper. I couldn't fathom or relate to most of her poems which made it harder for me to like this collection of poems.

Common experiences which we sometimes fail to take notice of just because we are clouded by the white noise around us. Both fresh and wise, Kay’s poetry allows readers to join her on the journey of discovering herself and the world around her. The poetry books I have read so far are either lackluster or bland in terms of writing, but this book completely changed my viewpoint on poetry. I like the challenge of trying to figure out what that room full of people needs or wants on that particular night. I’ll always keep an extra supply of chocolate and rain boots nearby, because there is no heartbreak that chocolate can’t fix.Because listeners of spoken-word poetry do not have the benefit of being able to sit and read and reread a poem, the poet is forced to make sure that their metaphors and imagery come through strongly and are not overly obscure.
