The rats of NIMH come up with a brilliant solution to Mrs Frisby's problem and she, in turn, renders them a great service, but the rats are in danger too, and little by little Mrs Frisby discovers their extraordinary past . A Favourite Quote: There was a smell of dampness in the air as the frosted ground thawed, a smell of things getting ready to grow. When this happens, when a mouse runs past my foot while out in the yard, or, Heaven forbid, comes anywhere near the structure of our house, my screams often sound like the sound effects from the famous shower scene from Psycho.

Meeting the owl riveted me in the book and 1982 film but nothing awed me more than a widow making discoveries about her husband, Jonathan.Frisby made me realize how many strong single mother figures I had in stories and entertainment as a child. Frisby, a widowed field mouse who seeks to protect her children and home from destruction by a farmer's plow. In essence, Sanders finds that O'Brien promotes reading as an empowering tool which is an important lesson that children learn through reading this book. I mean rats and a few mice with special intellectual properties that want to build their own successful community.

I must confess I still pick it up every decade or so and read it again, for the sheer pleasure in such a simple but compelling story. Will the rats of NIMH - a group of highly intelligent laboratory rats - help her find a solution to her dilemma? The entirety of my own childhood was filled with talking animals, and this is a truly unique story that any kid (or adult) with such proclivities could appreciate. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH won numerous awards including the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, Newbery Medal, and the runner-up National Book Award in 1972; the Mark Twain Award in 1973; the Pacific Northwest Library Association Young Readers' Choice Award and the William Allan White Children's Book Award in 1974. My nitpicking (of a children’s book) aside, I’m sure the intended audience would still very much enjoy a tale like this.

For me, the narrator makes all of the difference for an audiobook, and Barbara did a great job with this book! Why do I always prefer small colonies of animals in fiction and wish for them to take over the world? His haunting young adult novel Z FOR ZACHARIAH was completed posthumously by his wife, Sally, and daughter, Jane, using the author's notes. Frisby is the widow of his old friend Jonathan, he suggests that she seek help from the rats who live in a rosebush on the farm. I think it was my second-grade teacher who read this to us in class, like a chapter a day, or something.I love those children's books told from the perspective of animals, because it really forces you to change your point of view when approaching a story (those poor mice really live every single day of their life avoiding to get killed! Between 1989 and 1990, I took some additional college courses in hopes of getting a teaching certificate.

But her youngest son, Timothy, lies ill with pneumonia and is too sick to be taken on such a perilous journey. In my review, I compared the book and the movie and concluded that although they were quite different, I loved them both. As an adult I appreciate the fact that the book is about a parent that is sacrificing to save her children instead of the standard children’s book that is about children needing to take care of themselves because the adults around them are unable to protect them.
