It’s not uncommon for a player to move a pawn in one direction, only to have another player move the pawn right back. When all four Hero Pawns stand on their respective Item Space simultaneously, you grab the items (flip the Theft Tile), the alarms are triggered, and you dash for the exits in an attempt to out run the malls armed guards (before the timer expires). The numbers in the bottom right corner of each Action Tile correspond to how many people are playing the game (for instance in a four-player game each player gets exactly one Action Tile, these are labelled 3. The first seven slowly introduce all of the rules of the game, and then the last 10 add in additional challenges. Magic Maze is simple and straightforward enough for most audiences, and it’s just plain fun, but it won’t be for everyone.

With a completely new group, you might play some training scenarios multiple times until they win, just so they can gain confidence in the system. I certainly prefer the multiplayer game for the energy it creates and the fun situations it provides, but the solitaire game is fun too–more maze than magic, but there are few “magic” solitaire games that are engrossing enough to want to play again and again and again. The game starts easy and gradually brings in more and more challenge and uniqueness but can be kept (relatively) simple for families too. Take the big ‘do something’ pawn and bang it in front of them, gavel style, like a passive-aggressive judge with a penchant for mime.

Especially when you egg the person on by casually tapping the pawn while you’re waiting for them to act.For Magic Maze, my bailout point is ‘I can see why people enjoy it, but I really don’t want to play it again’. Before taking the final leap and turning the sand timer over you can talk strategies and plot quicker ways to escape, or if this is your fifth time setting up having failed four times consecutively, feel free to punch the walls or go outside and scream at pigeons. Magic Maze requires players to pay attention to what’s happening and to formulate a plan to get the adventurers where they need to be.

Solo is surprisingly difficult, which I appreciated, especially because it feels the same as the regular game. You may lightly place the pawn when you need someone to get to something but not necessarily immediately.

This is a very good game of wordless communication and anticipation, and when you can fluidly complete the level with no miscommunications it’s a very good experience for the whole group.
