In 2004, Ayoade and Holness took the Marenghi character to Channel 4, creating the spoof horror comedy series Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. First, Ayoade is incredibly self-deprecating, even observing that "Ayoade is so terrified of criticism that he prefers to criticize himself (often mid-sentence, and in parentheses) before the reader has a chance to demur.

Each sentence brings you on a rollercoaster you've never been on before; you never know what is going to happen next. The only faults I saw in this book was I didn't get a lot of the references to celebrities enough to enjoy the joke to it's full capability and I wish the middle portion was more like the 'Interview' with himself section as they were definitely my favourite parts. From 2013 to 2014, Ayoade voiced Templeton, the class nerd, in the CBBC animated series Strange Hill High.

Richard Ayoade is many things - film director (of Submarine and the forthcoming The Double), comedy actor ( The IT Crowd), comedian and TV presenter ( Gadget Man). I would say you must know a lot about films and directors, but I don't and I still enjoyed this book. Writing’s an opportunity for me to get away from all that and create a world in which women view me positively: the ones who support me are rewarded, and the ones who don’t are definitively and objectively proved to be wrong.

If the answers to any of those (rhetorical) questions are ‘a little’ or ‘a lot’ then you are in for a treat with Richard Ayoade’s debut novel: Ayoade on Ayoade. Unnecessarily I would start to think, "Is this his genuine opinion, he appears to being too genuine to be mocking. A much-used word, karma is loosely understood as a system of checks and balances in our lives, of good actions and bad deeds, of good thoughts and bad intentions. Ayoade is first rejected in favor of Mr T, who subsequently drops out and Ayoade is cast after “they’ve exhausted all other options.At last, the definitive book about perhaps the best cabin crew dramedy ever filmed: View From the Top starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original. He can provide the usual satiric short essays, that might have been seen before and might not, which provide glimpses of the stereotypic life in Hollywood, but the book never rises beyond that. Ayoade continued his association with The Mighty Boosh in the third series, reprising his role and acting as script editor.

I bought this book because I love Richard on TV, but perhaps I am too old to appreciate this interview techniquery (that is an imaginary word) and oh yes I hate footnotes. I'm aware the book was trying to be deliberately irreverent, but that only works if the end result is actually funny, which, alas, this mostly wasn't. I’m not worried about getting distracted but it’ll take time getting used to doing things on my own computer.There may even be a bit of practical advice hidden in there too, but you’ll have to sift through the silliness to get there. The food, drink and random odds and sods can all indeed be found as imagery, phrases and passing mentions on the pages given but they aren’t at all what a reader would ever think to look up nor what these pages are actually about (as much as this book could be said to be about anything) – and ‘aboutness’ is the very key to helpful indexing. Ayoade and his brother-in-law, actor Laurence Fox, engaged in a public vocal feud in 2020, when Fox asked Ayoade to announce his support for him on Twitter after a controversial appearance on Question Time. The book is structured in a number of parts, with Part 1 being a Chronology or timeline of the origin of ‘Ayoade’, helpfully dating back to the year 1488, and the bulk of the book in Part 2 being a series of ten interviews ‘in conversation with himself’, from the perspective of one Ayoade (in interviewer/journalist role) questioning another (as his film director persona).
