So while players are waiting for their turn and deciding which card to play next, they can read the small text at the bottom of the card to learn more about the historical setting. Thereafter, players get more adept at trying to anticipate the possibilities that may come from different factions during play. In 878: Vikings – Invasions of England, players control the invading Vikings or the English nobles who are trying to withstand the invasion. While not quite as thematic-feeling in this one (yet still thematic, if you think about it), this game has two ways that each side can win the game. Each deck has a specific number of movement cards in it and managing them is an important part of the game.

The card draw is random but each of the cards represent a historic leader along with a number of units for an invading army to be used that turn. If the Viking player gains control of a shire containing a city, place a Viking Control token on the space. The English start the game controlling all of England but a Viking Leader will invade from the sea each Turn. Again, this is a very minor criticism and arguably it may be a design choice to keep consistency across cards that have the same effects. This game system turned out to be a pleasant delight, and has me very interested in checking out some of the others like 1754 – Conquest: The French and Indian War (which I know she’ll like, because of the Indians).Another minor complaint is around the card art – I’ve already said that the art is lovely but I would have liked to see more unique examples of it. The English start with control of the entire continent, but every round, a new Viking leader invades from the sea and threatens to conquer England! The Vikings will often get 4 or more Hits when they roll, so unless I have a lot of Fyrd left after my first roll, I will command-decision anyone I can to fight another day.

The English players raise reinforcements from cities they control, while the Vikings must wait for a new invasion for reinforcements. Even if they consider it as a simple 60-minute filler – my game of this went closer to 90 minutes plus a bit.Just when you think you’ve got good numbers to attack, your units may get scared and run away (flee).

I am also a sucker for maps, especially ones of England, and this one is beautifully uncluttered and functional. The event cards may add a little wrinkle here and there to the overall flow of the game but all their game-changing rules are clearly presented on the cards themselves. The game plays out over at most 7 rounds or until the conditions are overwhelmingly in favour of one team. That previous comment bears a second read because it’s only with three or four players that gamers will get what’s really being offered. Reinforcement phases provide some great relief for the English side, as well as tactical targets to keep in mind for the Viking player.

There are unique models for all four playable factions, as well as the “Fyrd”, the peasant militia units that rise up to defend their cities when attacked.
