Important Note: To avoid popping or deflating your pad, it’s important to adjust the air volume depending on the outside temps. I placed it in my two-person backpacking tent (the kind that claim they’re for two people but really fit one person and their stuff) and it was a perfect fit, leaving about a foot at the entrance for my backpack. If I do get one, though, I’m still going to get a reasonably comfortable night’s sleep on the thicker fabric. I’ve recently been on two winter wild camping trips using the Klymit Inertia O Zone sleeping pad with the closed cell foam mat and the Therm-a-rest Z-Lite Sol. For one, it’s the most comfortable sleeping pad I’ve used, providing plenty of cushion and stability.

For these reasons we have selected the Klymit Insulated Static V as our Budget Pick for the Wilderness Backpacker. The underside utilizes a thick 75D material, whereas the less exposed topside has a lighter-weight 30D polyester. Klymalite™ Synthetic insulation: Lightweight, compressible and durable, advanced synthetic insulation in the chambers slows the transfer of air between the top and bottom halves of the pad for improved thermal performance. You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. It fills up with around 14 solid breaths, and packs down to about the size of a water bottle with little effort.Of course, side-sleeping isn't the most comfortable on any backpacking pad, this pad still performed better than some of the others I've used over the years.

Throughout our testing period, this pad showed no signs of leakage, and the valve system worked flawlessly. I can only say, this doesn't have any such feature and I anticipate won't be as efficient as other pads. When I first opened the packed sleeping pad, I immediately noticed how much smaller and lighter it was compared to my old mat, yet when I rolled it out, it was still the same length! The V-shape cradles your body, so you don’t slip off your pad or twist your sleeping bag around in the middle of the night. Whether you're an extreme mountain athlete or a weekend sunseeker, the Klymit range offers something for everyone: insulated airbeds to featherlight ground pads, sleeping bags, and more.

One thing I commend Klymit on doing is their use of structuring their air channels to allow your sleeping bag to be the star insulator. It was easy to deflate and roll up, and the included stuff sack is large enough that if you don’t roll it perfectly it will still fit. We like the original for its durability and don’t find the weight to be a significant difference for most wilderness backpackers. Find the best sleeping bag/pad for your next outdoor adventure using our independent reviews and ratings. The baffles on the side fill up more when you lay in the center, creating a sort of mini side wall that helps to keep you on the mat as you sleep (no one likes waking up on a cold tent floor).
