Ramana gave upadesa, "instruction or guidance given to a disciple by his Guru", [web 6] pointing to the true Self of the devotees and showing them the truth of it. David Godman’s Be As You Are: The Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi chronicles most of the important teachings of Ramana Maharshi. Francis Bacon once said 'Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.

But if this sense is lost through the practice of vichara, the divine will will act and guide the course of events. Although it may seem at a first look into this book that Sri Ramana is ignoring his own advice, "to leave off all this verbiage" this is not in fact the case. If you read this in conjunction with David Godman's "Living through the words of Bhagavan" in my opinion these are the only books you will ever need to attain the necessary knowledge for practice.

If We talk of knowing the Self, there must be two selves, one a knowing self, another the self which is known, and the process of knowing. Because since the ego which identifies the form of a body as ‘I’ has perished, he (the wise one) is the formless existence-consciousness.Sages say that the state in which the thought ‘I’ (the ego) does not rise even in the least, alone is Self ( swarupa) which is silence ( mouna). am not asking on behalf of them alone, but also on behalf of those who will believe in Me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You.

Now this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent. When self-enquiry reaches this level there is an effortless awareness of being in which individual effort is no longer possible since the ‘I’ who makes the effort has temporarily ceased to exist.

Recommended as a intermediate level Advaita book, or Ramana book, rather than for someone starting off on the path of self-inquiry or nonduality. Still, it's a little like sitting with the master himself and letting his knowledge and compassion become your own. within one's mind, when one reaches the Heart, the individual 'I' sinks crestfallen, and at once reality manifests itself as 'I-I'.
