I won’t lie, this bar disappointed me. Although not a fan of coconut, I’ll make an exception when it’s mixed with chocolate – just not for this bar. Barebells has somehow figured out how to capture the texture you want in a candy bar, while still providing delicious flavor AND very favorable nutrition facts.

So all in all Barebells have delivered on the mint and the sprinkles, but to call this mint dark chocolate is a bare-faced lie and I just won’t condone it. Lemon Curd White Chocolate (8.5/10) It’s not too sweet, but there’s definitely sweetness to it. There are sugar alcohols (14g) in these bars to sweeten them, which often don’t sit well with my stomach. But after eating quite a few of these bars (multiple boxes) I haven’t noticed any issue with the sugar alcohols. Most plant-based protein bars use pea protein, rice protein, peanut protein, and soy protein instead of whey or other milk-based protein.Barebells made some rather large claims when this flavour was released, and similarities with a certain range of luxury Italian chocolates were more than implied (‘little crunchy Rocher-style Hazelnut pieces’). Does it live up to their hype? The center is softy, and you don’t have to put a lot of effort to chew. The sweet and creamy chocolate coating and the crispies on the top felt good. The overall texture is spot on. And then there’s the issue that if you promise dark chocolate, you should really deliver dark chocolate. I love dark chocolate – it’s rich is wonderful, and I don’t even mind the hint of bitterness. But this isn’t it. It’s too sweet and too faint a flavour. Plus, the chocolate coating is too thin for it to hold it’s own against the mint. On top of their slightly spennier price point, there are so many different varieties of protein bar out there. It can be hard to know which one to choose – especially if you have dietary requirements (such as being vegan), have allergies or suffer from IBS.

Historically speaking, protein bars have been very dense and chewy. For bars that have tried to mimic the candy bar textures, I’ve found that the flavor is not quite there, or they end up tasting very artificial (like Fit Crunch Bars).

There’s no other way to say it – this bar is ‘meh’, boring, a bit bland. It’s not bad, but its not fab. It’s oddly similar to Fulfil’s Hazelnut Whip bar, just without the benefit of a hazelnut flavour. No shade to Barebells but, like with so many other flavours, Fulfil just outdoes them here. Hazelnut Nougat (6.5/10) However, If you don’t have any other options and still like to try it with proper diet management and calorie counting. You can have it once a day. I really like the cashew pieces on this one – they add some crunch and are a refreshing change from the crispies you find on pretty much every protein bar these days. Covered in tiny crispy pieces of almond, its core is a soft, pleasant texture and tastes delicious. Not the best one like the salty peanut barebells protein bar, but it’s still one of the best ones out there. Barebells are the most candy bar-like protein bar out there, and they’ve totally changed the way I view protein bars.
